Ten kilometres west of Marlborough, Winterbourne Bassett is the most northern of the three rectangular parishes that include Winterbourne Monkton and Berwick Bassett. All three lie across the valley of the upper Kennet in Wiltshire.

The name Winterbourne was inspired by the small streams located at the head of the Kennet, and is a name shared by other neighbouring settlements. In the 13th century, the suffix Bassett was appended from the lords of the manor.

History

There is little evidence of prehistoric settlement in the area. Although there are earthworks on the western slopes of Hackpen Hill and south of Stanmore Copse and a barrows near the village. There are remains of a Neolithic monument of concentric stone circles west of the village.

The flat, well-drained lands of the parish were used mainly for arable farming in historic times.
