HISTORY

Longbridge Deverill gets its name from the River Deverill which runs through the whole valley. The name of the village means “diving rill.”

Evidence suggests that the village has been inhabited by farming people since 3500 BC. The earliest settlements were located on high ground because this area was drier and much easier to clear.

At around 600 BC was when there was evidence of organised villages in Longbridge Deverill. There is an Iron Age site located in Cow Down, and another one is near Keysley Farm.

The Deverill Valley was also of importance during the Roman times. There are two Roman roads crossing the ford at Kingdton Deverill and possibly Roman villages at the other Deverills.

During the 18th century, the population of the village grew. Carriers and village shops became a presence when the road wagon was introduced in the late in the century.

The village suffered during the 20th century, particularly during the wars.
