Keevil, a small village in Wiltshire, is located in southwest England. The civil parish is perhaps best known for the Royal Air Force barracks of the same name, RAF Keevil.

Keevil is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, with the first historical reference being in an Anglo-Saxon document of 964. There have been archaeological findings in the village, Roman coins and early Norman stones, indicating some early settlement history in the area, where the land is made of clay and mostly flat. The village name has changed over time, listed in many early documents as “Kefle,” then Chivile in 1086, followed by listings of Kivele, Cyvel, and Kyvelee. The current name of Keevil is derived from Cornish, “chi” meaning a field and ‘vele,’ meaning house or villa.

The village of Keevil contains several historic structures including St. Leonard’s Parish Church, Keevil Manor House, and a 14th century historic house, known as Talboys. Keevil Manor House was built between 1560 and 1580. The manor and property were broken up into separate lots in the early 20th century.

Keevil’s main industry is agriculture. In the early years, it was mainly wheat and bean crops, but the land was slowly turned over for dairy farming, which continues to be the mainstay of industry in the village today. The village had several notable clothing mills during the 17th century.

RAF Keevil was built in the 1930s and was used by Allied forces throughout World War II. After the war, it housed Polish refugees for a period of time. While no longer under military control, the airfield is still active and is frequently used for RAF training exercises. It is also home to a few glider clubs, both private and part of the RAF.
While a small village, the community makes great efforts to keep locals involved. There are numerous events and clubs within the village that comprise most of the social activities of Keevil including a cricket club, Keevil and District’s Women Institute (formed in 1940), and a horticultural society. That group was formed in 1852 and became well known for its Keevil Flower Show, though the event ceased to exist after the 1950s.
