Flower Delivery to Yeadon, West Yorkshire

Want to find out where fish and chips originated? Head out to Yeadon where you will find the world’s oldest fish and chip shop. It was established in the 1870s in a high street locally known as The Steep. Standing on the cobbled hill, fish and chips would not be the only thing you’ll enjoy, but also a spectacular view of a quaint town.

Looking back

The early inhabitants of Yeadon were the Romans and Early Britons, as shown by the coins, rock marks, names of places, and other traces of their presence that they have left. During these times, the town was still a slope, decorated with flowers in Yeadon, with an abundant supply of water, pasture for cattle, and wood. An Anglican Christian and Norse settlement then followed between 675 and 725 A.D.

When the Domesday Book was compiled, the town was one of the Terra Regis or land owned by the King, but it wasn’t known as Yeadon yet. Its name is believed to have been derived from two Old English words with ‘don’ that meant hill. It has two manors dedicated for the king and was managed by two Saxons. In the 19th century, Yeadon became a clothing and mill town and held cattle fair every first Monday in April of each year.

1933 saw major improvements in this town in West Yorkshire. The Yorkshire Electricity company was established and supplied power to houses in Yeadon. It is also at this time that the town had its own water works supplied by the Yeadon Water Works company. The year also marked the birth of several indoor amusements, such as the Pantomime Companies, and Operatic and Dramatic Societies.

Places of Interest

The Town Hall

Yeadon’s Town Hall today features a cobble stone square in front of it, a bus stop, a place for the Friday Market stands, and the back entrance to Morrisons, a shopping centre in Yeadon. But this wasn’t always the case. In the past, the Town Hall was surrounded by other large buildings that getting to it was a puzzle. It was built in the Victorian era under a planning and building process that can only be described as chaotic. Today, it looks as grand inside as it is outside, and is often used as a venue for fairs, tea parties and other events.

Yeadon Tarn

Also known as Yeadon Dam, this lake that is nestled between High street and the airport runway plays a variety of roles today. It is used for sailing, fishing and habitat for swans, mallard ducks and Canada geese. Yeadon flowers also grow on its bank. It also has a nearby BMX bike track where annual competitions are held. During World War II, however, it was literally drained, so that enemy aircraft would not be able to use its reflection to identify the location of the nearby Avro factory that manufactures British aircraft.

Yeadon High Street

Built directly over an old stream, Yeadon High Street is basically made of culverts underneath the cobbles. When new mills were built close to a water supply and canal, culverting were extended down to Kirk Lane. Now that houses have replaced the mills, people are experiencing periodical flooding in the cellars that is likely caused by the old stream running from the Yeadon Tarn.

Located at one of the highest points of the City of Leeds, Yeadon is a great place to visit. Now, if you are looking to send flowers to Yeadon, we have a large range of flowers perfect as gifts. Order flowers for delivery to Yeadon and make someone happy today.
