Ossett, a town in the county of West Yorkshire, is located in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England. It is within the metropolitan district of Wakefield. It is located roughly halfway between the west and east coast of England.

Ossett’s town name comes from the Anglo Saxon language and has two possible meanings: “the fold of a man named Osla,” or ‘a fold frequented by blackbirds.” It is seen in some historic texts as Osset. The village appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Osleset.” There was a Roman road that went through the current town and served as the model and location for future roads through Ossett.
Throughout history, Ossett was known as a coal mining town, with mining happening in the town as early as the 14th century. During the Industrial Revolution, there were a large number of mining pits in Ossett, most of which were closed by the 1960s. Ossett is often known as “border country” as its central England location is where the mining areas of the country and textile centres meet. There were a small number of textile mills in Ossett and surrounding areas that were not large in size, but produced many high-quality products. There are still four operational textile mills in the town. In the later 20th century, Ossett was known for its manufacture of shock absorbers, though that industry has since moved out of Ossett as well. The town had a brief period in the 19th century when it was known for its spa, with medicinal waters that were believed to be helpful with certain skin diseases. It was located in the southeast region of the town which is still known as “Ossett Spa.”

There are many historic structures in Ossett, including Trinity Church, which was built in the 1860s. The spire of the church is 226 feet high and can be seen from many surrounding villages. There is also a registered red phone booth historic structure in the Ossett town centre, as well as the Ossett town hall, built in 1908. Ossett has other churches in town and during the 18th and 19th centuries, Ossett became well-known as a centre of religious nonconformist, as many of the church leaders at that time worked together and supported each other, no matter their religion.

Ossett holds many events to celebrate the rich history of the town, most notably the Annual World Coal-Carrying Championships. This event happens on Easter Monday every year. In addition, the Ossett Beer Festival takes place in August to celebrate the many breweries that have established businesses in Ossett and the surrounding communities. Annual events held on May Day, Christmas, and a summer gala all are well supported by the local Ossett community to celebrate their town pride.
