The History of Marsden, West Yorkshire

When John Edward Crowther Ltd moved into Marsden, the Bank Bottom Mill was opened. It would later be called the Marsden Mill, and was one of the biggest mills throughout Yorkshire. Workers flocked to work within the industry, as it became a profitable business for local cloth manufacturing. Unfortunately, the mill closed down in 2003, as the cloth industry saw an irreversible decline.
One of the other most popular landmarks in the area is the Church of St. Bartholomew. Building of the church completed in 1899, except for the tower and Parochial Hall, which were built in 1911 and 1924 respectively, with an extension added to the hall as late as 1978.

Events in Marsden Throughout the Year

There is something on for everyone throughout the year. The one that you will hear about the most is the Marsden Cuckoo Day, which is held in April every year. Locals get involved in duck races, clog dancing, and the “cuckoo walk.” The name of the event is after the Marsden Cuckoo legend, which tells the story of the arrival of a cuckoo at the start of the spring. The people wanted to keep the cuckoo to keep the spring, so started to build a wall. Just before the last stones were laid, the cuckoo flew away!
