History

This village was once a settlement that was greatly influenced by the Society of Dependants, a small Christian sect that is also known as Cokelers who left London in the mid-1800s. These people constructed their first chapel here and then run a combination store, which houses the village’s shops until today.

The renowned author of “The Alexandria Quartet”, Lawrence Durrell, lived here from 1933 to 1934 in a cottage called Chestnut Mead. Together with his first wife, Nancy, and another couple, George and Pam Wilkinson, Durrell left Fitzrovia to live in the English countryside. It was in this village where Durrell wrote “Pied Piper of Lovers”, which became the first novel he published.
