HISTORY

The name Hurstpierpoint is derived from “Hurst” which is an Old English name for a wood and “Pierpont” after the de Pierpont family who came with William the Conqueror in 1066. Hurstpierpoint is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Throughout the centuries, several variations of the village's name has been recorded: Herst (11th century), Herstperpunt (14th century) and Perpondesherst (15th century).

Today, the village is mostly one long street featuring buildings that are from the 18th century or later.
