Located in the District of Chichester, Eartham, West Sussex is a civil parish and village that is located just over five miles northeast of Chichester and east of the A285. The village itself is rather quaint and is rather typical of the small communities that are found in the West Sussex district. For the small number of people who live in this area, they enjoy rural life that is also blessed with many modern amenities.

History

The area itself seems to have been the passing home of nomadic tribes in the early years of human habitation of England which stretches back thousands of years. The most notable historic construction in the region was a Roman-built road that linked the community of Chichester which was formed in Roman times to London. Today, you can walk along part of the ancient Roman road in Eartham along Stane Street.

Over the centuries the town of Eartham slowly grew thanks to its location near Chichester and a few large homes and structures were built in the village. Of the most noted was the Anglican parish church which was dedicated to Saint Margaret as well as a public house known originally as The George and Dragon, but now called simply The George.

The Manor Farm which sits adjoining The George is the centre of a considerable farming enterprise that is a big part of the community. However, one of the attractions is Eartham Wood which is to the north of the village and offers considerable woodlands of mostly beech trees that residents and many visitors wander through during the spring and summer months. 

Although small in population, Eartham was the home of the famed Hambledon cricketer and landlord of the Bat & Ball Inn Richard Nyren.

The Famed Eartham House

Established by Thomas Hayley in 1743, Eartham House was his residence until his death. During that time, his son William Hayley became a noted poet and lived in the house from 1774 to 1800. It was enlarged during that time and sold to William Huskisson who was an MP and statesman. The present structure on the property was designed by Sir Edwin Lutvens which followed the purchase of the home in 1905 by a William Bird.

Today, the house is now the Great Ballard School which is an independent school that educated children from 2 to 13 years old. Founded in 1924, the school was moved to the home in 1961 where it has remained to this day. It caters to both day students and boarding pupils.
