Flower Delivery Brownhills, West Midlands with Clare Florist

Brownhills is a pleasant town that sits right on the end of the West Midlands metropolis. It was once famed for its coal mining industry, having been built on coal mines, railways and canals.

History

Although the town of Brownhills lies on the prehistoric Watling Street, it hasn’t been mentioned in the records until the 17th century. One of its many districts today however, Ogley Hay, was mentioned in the Domesday Book as a settlement.

Sometime around the 19th century, Brownhills became linked to the railway and canal networks. This resulted to the flourish of the coal mining industry. From being a hamlet with only 300 townspeople, Brownhills’ population immediately surged to over 13,000 by the end of the century. Majority were working in the coal industry.

Mining was the town’s main source of income until subsequent pit closures were issued in the 1950s. This led to drastic economic decline which still is continuing today. The local authorities have instituted numerous regeneration programmes, however, hoping these can restore the town’s glories.

Attractions and Landmarks

The “Jigger” Sculpture

Standing tall on Brownhills’ High Street is one of the town’s most prominent attractions – a huge steel monument of a coal miner. This was erected in May 2006 by John McKenna who wanted to honor the mining tradition of Brownhills. A competition was set later on to choose a nickname for the masterpiece. The chosen name was Jigger. It was a tribute to Jack “Jigger” Taylor who died after the collapse of the Walsall Wood pit in 1951.

Chasewater (Staffordshire)

Located on the edge of Brownhills is Chasewater. It is surrounded by a vast area that has been designated as a country park. There, guests can engage into numerous activities including sailing, water skiing, bird watching and angling.

Not far from the park is the Chasewater Railway. It operates the heritage rail service of the old mineral railway between Chasetown and Brownhills. The main station of the railway has been designated as the Brownhills West.

The Shire Oak Park

Located opposite of the A5 in Brownhills Common are a nature reserve and the Shire Oak Park. Here, people can observe not only scenic views of trees and flowers in Brownhills, but also of different varieties of birds.

Holland Park

A few more kilometers to the edge of the Common sit the Holland Park. It is a recreational area with a large skate park and a multi-sports area. The park was initially built as part of the town’s £95,000 environmental regeneration project. Although it opened in 2002, the project is yet to be completed with the construction of the new youth shelter.

Cultural Events

Canal Festival

The Canal festival is held every June. For this event, the town of Brownhills always goes all out from entertainment to display events to boat trips. Stalls also flourish during this period. So if ever you want to send flowers to Brownhills, this would be a great time to roam around and check flower stalls to find the most beautiful of Brownhills flowers.

Although it might seem like so Brownhills is definitely not just for nature lovers. It can also be a great destination for sports enthusiasts as it has countless sports centres and clubs. It’s a good stop for music lovers as well with the Station Hotel in High Street hosting big concerts. Finally, it’s perfect for social groups as it is home to numerous public houses, one being the Shoulder of Mutton which has been standing since the 1850s.
