West Glamorgan is a preserved county in Wales with a population of more than 300,000. Based on the Lieutenancies Act 1997, it is the role of Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant to ensure that the place remains a preserved county. What are some of these reserves?

Berry Wood, Knelston, Gower, Swansea

This particular reserve is the epitome of mixed woodland, which is a rarity in this part of Gower. Although it’s found in a poorly drained glacial drift, plenty of trees thrived. Some of the species growing in it are oak, ash, hazel, sallow, aspen, birch and rowan. There is a small triangular orchard within the western boundary that is home to several apple trees. Of course, a natural reserve would be incomplete without the beautiful flowers in West Glamorgan. In the Berry Wood, there are marsh marigold, honeysuckle, golden saxifrage and many others.

Blaenant y Gwyddyl, Glyneath, Neath, Port Talbot

This is an area of ancient semi-nature broadleaved woodland that features a stream, waterfalls and lots of oak. Some parts of the reserve serve as non-woodland habitats, such as the rocky river bed of Blaenant y Gwyddyl. A number of birds breed in the area, including the Great Spotted Woodpecker, robin, wren and some migrant birds thrown into the mix. Amidst a wide array of trees and West Glamorgan flowers, the overall flora and fauna presents a view that is nothing short of amazing.

Broad Pool, Cilibion, Gower, Swansea

As the name suggests, Broad Pool is a large body of freshwater that is known as the best and most conspicuous feature in central Gower. It is believed that the pool has been around since 1645. Although shallow, Broad Pool has only dried out three times in the last 180 years. It is home to a rich assembly of aquatic plants, including a rare and attractive plant, fringed water lily. Apart from trees, plants and flowers in West Glamorgan, Broad Pool is also visited by a number of waterfowls and wetland birds.

In addition to coastal reserves, there are camping sites and holiday parks in West Glamorgan.

Nicholaston Farm & Caravan Site is in a gradually sloping meadow, overlooking Tor Bay.

Greenways Leisure Park is a high-quality caravan and camping park situated in what is known as Britain’s first designated area of outstanding natural beauty.

Ty Canol Farm Camping is a park for campers and caravaners, which was opened in summer 2004.

Other campsites and parks include Cwmnanthir Camping, Glyn Y Mul Farm – Lone Wolf Campsite, Oxwich Camping Park and many others.

As a county that was created on 1 April 1974, West Glamorgan has definitely come a long way. A notable feature in the county is the West Glamorgan Archive Service where various materials related to the history of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot are collected and saved.
