HISTORY

The Grand Junction Canal (which is now called Grand Union Canal) arrived in Watford in 1798 during the Industrial Revolution. It didn't come alone as the London and Birmingham Railway followed in 1837. Both were located in the Nascot Wood area to provide an easy gradient over the Chiltern Hills.

The aim of the railway company to keep costs down was thrown into disarray because the Earl of Essex (Cassiobury) and Clarendon (The Grove) resisted. Although both agreed that the canal would be built through their estates, they didn't agree to having the passage of steam through their land. As such, the railway company was forced to build and expensive tunnel starting in Nascot Wood and emerging near Kings Langley station.

The woodland eventually grew back and today, the area contains ancient woodland among housing from the late 19th to early 21st century.
