HISTORY

In Welsh, the town's name is Llanilltud Fawr and it's taken from St Illtud who founded a church and religious school in the area. Evidence of occupation dates back to Neolithic times.

When the Roman legions withdrew in the 5th century, Saint Illtud arrived (from Brittany) and founded a monastery and a college. Both the Saxons and the Danes invaded the college and it suffered. Ultimately, it was destroyed by the Vikings (in 987) and the Normans (late 11th century).

Llantwit Major transformed into a dormitory town in the 20th century, mostly due to the presence of the Royal Air Force at St Athan. But despite its modernisation and growth, the town still maintains its pre-modern vibe.
