History
The origin of the name Gosforth is said to have come from the title Gese Ford which means “the ford over the Ouse.” This refers to the crossing over the local River Ouse or Ouseburn. However, others believe that the name comes from the Old English “Gosaford” which means “a ford where the geese dwell.”
The area's name was first recorded as Goseford in 1166. The name Gosforth was first mentioned in 1166. The township of Gosfoth was held of the crown by the Surtees family from 1100 to 1509. From there, it passed to Robert Brandling by marriage.
In 1799, St Nicholas' Church was built, and the design was by John Dodds. The church replaced an earlier church building.
By the 19th century, Gosforth was the location of quite a few collieries.
The modern day centre of Gosforth, which straddles the Great North Road, originated in 1826 as a settlement known as Bulman Village.
