HISTORY

On the banks of Tillingbourne at Shalford grew two hamlets: West Shalford and East Shalford. The latter was the Shalford listed in the Domesday Book while the former was part of the large estate of Bramley.

West Shalford developed into a medieval village and slowly eclipsed East Shalford; the western portion became busier while the eastern part remained isolated and rural.

Most of the cottages in the village were occupied by craftsmen and small husbandmen. Eventually, these cottages were turned into alehouses and shops. Most of the cottages dated back to the 17th century but the Austen estate gave them a more Georgian appearance in the 1820s.

Wealthy residents and cottage inhabitants co-existed in the village. The Godwin-Austen estate dominated the old village by the late 19th century and left no room for development. The village was separated from the Common by arable fields and the southern area developed into what is now Shalford.  

ATTRACTIONS

Shalford Mill – a Grade II* listed building owned by the National Trust. The structure is an 18th-century watermill that is located on the River Tillingbourne. The mill is a tourist attraction that is open to the public during summer months.

Hunt Nature Park – a new wildlife reserve that was created by volunteers from the Wey & Arun Canal Trust.

Shalford  Cycle Way – this is a long-distance cycle route that links the North and South Downs from Guildford and passes through Shalford.

Wey River Towpath Walk – stretches from Guildford Town Centre to Godalming.  

River Wey – a river that flows close to Shalford and contains crayfish and other kinds of fish. Narrow boats can be hired and you can go river walks as well.
