Just 35 miles in the southwest of English capital, London, is the small suburban village of Mytchett, Surrey.   It’s not much of a place; in fact, it’s a tiny town measuring only up to 2 miles in length. It is bordered by the South Western Main Line to the north, the Basingstoke Canal to the East, and the River Blackwater to the west, making it only 3/4 mile in width. Recent statistics noted its population to be just a little over 6,000.

Mytchett is a young village. Its community centre at Crossroads was erected only in the 1980s. Its only post office was closed down in 2012 to be a part of the Best One chain; the nearest of which is in Frimley Green.

What to See?

Unlike the big city of London, Mytchett has nothing much to boasts when it comes to attractions. But if you are looking for peace and quiet on your holiday—maybe a day or two away from the hustle and buzzle of the city, you’ll surely enjoy a rejuvenating break in the village.

Frimley Lodge Park

This 24 hectare park boasts a range of facilities and hosts a variety of events for family and visitors of all ages.

Its wide woodlands, picnic areas, open space, playgrounds, meadows and miniature railways offer families a number of opportunities to bond and have fun. It also has cricket pitches, football field, and putting course for available for hire for those who enjoy sports or are planning to organise sports competition. It holds a number of events too, including the annual Surrey heath Show, fun runs and walks.

One of its popular facilities is the Memory Tree where you are allowed to reflect peacefully or write a message on a rice paper and attach it to the tree. There’s also the British Military Fitness Opens class where you can join in a fun and energetic workout in the park where the air is fresh and where beautiful Mytchett flowers are everywhere.

Flourish Community Garden

The place to go for those with green thumbs or simply love gardens, the Flourish Community Garden hosts regular activities, workshops and events all year round.  It offers you the opportunity to learn more about the local flowers in Mytchett and many other useful gardening information.

The garden is led by community gardener Kate Turner and a team of volunteers, who recently won in the Summer Garden category at the Hampton Court Flower Show.

Basingstoke Canal

This 1794 British canal was built to connect the Basingstoke with River Thames at Weybridge through the Wey Navigation. It passes through a number of towns and villages including Mytchett, and was built with the purpose of allowing boast to pass from East London docks to Basingstoke. The project never gained commercial success though, falling to neglect beginning the 1950s. It was restored back to life in 1977 and in 1991 was reopened for navigation from River Wey to Greywell Tunnel.

The canal is a popular place for cyclists, dog owners and runners. Some dog owners actually allow their pets to swim in the water.
