HISTORY

Laxfield is recorded in the Domesday Book and it can trace its history back to the Saxon times due to an early church that was built. The village was awarded a charter to hold market in 1226 and the chosen day was Saturday.

Just like much of East Anglia, Laxfield and other surrounding areas were much involved in Puritan sentiment for majority of the 17th century. Laxfield was the birthplace of William Dowsing, a puritan soldier, and many of his kin and it wasn't a surprise that the village became a puritan parish.

The Fiske family departed for the Massachusetts Bay Colony by the mid-1630s. They left along with others as part of the emigration that happened during the Great Migration.

Today, Laxfield has local amenities that include a hardware store, a village shop and a primary school. The village has one of the biggest communal playing fields in Suffolk which also features a children's play area and a bowls green.

ATTRACTIONS

All Saints Church – mostly from the 14th century but it was officially completed by 1488. This is a very wide structure with a nave that is spanned by a scissor-beam roof. The church has an unusual tower because it is faced mostly in stone rather than flint. A superbly carved Seven Sacrament font is located within the church.

The Royal Oak – a late 15th-century inn located beside the church. You'll find witches marks – symbols that were carved in order to keep witches away – on the inner face of the chimney inside the pub.

Laxfield Guildhall – located across the inn and church. It's a beautiful brick and timber framed building that was put up by the Guild of St Mary in 1519. There is a small local museum on the upper floor of the building that displays items related to geology, social history and village history.
