A small village located in the southeastern portion of England, Fressingfield, Suffolk offers a population of about 900. The town itself offers a primary school, public house, medical centre, and three churches that represent the Anglican, Baptist, and Methodist faiths. The meaning of the name Fressingfield is not clear, but one popular theory is that “fressing” refers to a person named “Frisa” who owned the large field where the town now sits.

History

While the history of the Suffolk area goes back thousands of years with migrating tribes who inhabited the area, the earliest structure that still exists is a road constructed by the Romans that ran through Fressingfield from Pulham St. Mary to Peasenhall. The first documentation of Fressingfield occurs in the Domesday Book from 1086 AD. By the 15th century, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul was constructed and a Guildhall was built during the Elizabethan era which still stands and today is used as a restaurant.

The population of Fressingfield peaked in the mid-19th century when nearly 1,500 people lived in the town. By 1887, a well was created in celebration of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and while it does not exist today, the area is marked as “Jubilee Corner”. However, the town itself has been slowly losing its population which is now under 1,000 today. Where it once had five public houses, only the Swan Inn still remains.

While the town itself remains rather humble, it does boast enough historic structures to make it a place for tourists to visit while passing through the area. In addition, the town also boasts the Fressingfield FC that has a playing field for football, tennis courts, and even a bowling green. There is also a popular park that features a playground for children and the town itself has kept its quaint, yet beautiful appearance.

Fressingfield is also the birthplace of two notable residents. William Sancroft who became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1678 and was deposed in 1690 when he could not in good conscious swear a new oath for William and Mary. He returned to Ufford Hall which was the place of his birth and died three years later. William Etheridge was a famed 18th century architect most noted for building two bridges, the Old Walton Bridge and the more famous Mathematical Bridge in Cambridge where today a replica stands in its place.
