St Nicholas Church

The highlight of anyone’s visit to Denston is the 15th-century Perpendicular-style church dedicated to St Nicholas. Built as an act of late-medieval piety by the Denston family, the structure soon served a small group of priests until the Reformation changed everything 50 years later.

Although mostly intact, a few of the features of the St Nicholas Church have been altered, particularly the interior of the porch which has been whitewashed. The holy water stoup that greets visitors, however, is still one of the grandest in the county. Although changes have been made, the 15th-century doors of the church still remain intact.

Since the church is made largely out of stone (unusual in these parts of England), it’s proof that its makers put a lot of money into building this structure.

Denston’s St Nicholas Church is filled with interesting historic features. The carved bench decorations are one of those that stand out. Figures carved into the bench are mostly animal figures, such as hares, hounds, and lions. The most intriguing of the carved animals is the elephant which clearly doesn’t look like one but the mistake can be attributed to the carver not ever having seen one.

The carved wall plate also draws attention as you enter the church. It runs the length of the nave and chancel on both sides of the church. And just like the benches, it is decorated with different carved animal figures including some very peculiar creatures.

A couple of memorials are also in the church. The most striking has to be the memorial of John and Katherine Denston. The couple are lying in their death shrouds and look rather grim. There’s also a memorial to the Robinson family of Denston Hall.

The church in Denston is for anyone who has an interest in Catholic or liturgical history. It also allows you to glimpse into how the 15th-century ruling class spent their money. No expense was spared in this endeavour given stone had to be hauled from a different location to get this structure built.
