History
It is believed that the meaning of the village's name is “homestead by brook” or “Beaga's homestead.” The village is listed in the Domesday Book as Begoton or Begatona. During that time, the village was held by Hugh de Montfort and was just a small settlement.
Beyton was a farming community and was located on the glacial clay of “High” Suffolk. The village grew around the village green and along the main Ipswich to Bury St Edmunds road. In 1711, the road was turnpiked and it became an accident “black spot” in modern times. The village was bypassed in 1978 with the moden A14 road running to the north of the village. A conservation area was established in 1973.
