Located a mile west of Doune, Deanston was created in 1785 as a planned village offering accommodation for those who worked at the Adelphi cotton spinning mill, which was newly built at that time. Deanston forms part of the Scottish council district of Stirling.

A visitor to Deanston described the place in 1799 as “a village inhabited chiefly by the labouring people belonging to the Adelphi cotton-work...” After a serious fire in the 1820s, the mill had to be rebuilt, but this time, in a much more ambitious scale.

During the expansion, a bigger weir was built across the River Teith in order to divert water to the mill lades, which eventually became one of the largest in Scotland. Part of it still remains as to this day but as a scenic backwater. Its size is comparable to that of the Caledonian Canal, which was built around the same time to transport ocean-going ships.

History

The Adelphi Mill played a huge role in the history of Deanston. It continued to operate until 1949. By 1950, redevelopment and expansion of the mill caused other forms of power to be used. Eventually, the mill closed in 1965. However, the structure didn't lose purpose as it was converted into the Deanston Distillery.

However, the Deanston Distillery closed in 1982, but it was purchased and reopened by Burn Stewart – the company that also owns Tobermory Distilley on Mull – in 1990.
