Located in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, Wentworth is a village with a few structures of architectural and historical interest. That being said, lovers of architecture and history will appreciate a visit to the village to see these buildings.

History

The history of Wentworth is closely linked to great aristocratic families – the Wentworths, Watsons and Fitzwilliams – who presided over the village for generations.

The village dates back to at least 1066, which was when the lands were given to Adam de Newmarch and William le Flemming. They later passed this to the Canons of Bolton Abbey.

Although the Wentworths have close ties to the village, it's not known how they came to own the lands. Around 1300, they were united by marriage with the Woodhouse family, who lived in lands outside the village in what is now known as Wentworth Woodhouse.

Thomas Wentworth was the first of his family to achieve fame. He was the 1st Earl of Strafford. When he died, his son William inherited the title. Since he died without issue, the lands passed to the Watson family.

The Watsons – who later became Marquises of Rockingham – built many of the fine structures in the area like the East Front of Wentworth Woodhouse.

In 1782, Earl Fitzwilliams took over and was responsible for the industrial development in the area. The Fitzwilliam reign continued until 1979 when the 10th Earl died without issue. Since then, the property has been managed by a trust.
