The town of Stainforth is a civil parish located in South Yorkshire, England. Stainforth lies within the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, which makes it fairly close to Doncaster as well as Throne and Hatfield. According to a census that was taken in 2011, Stainforth has a population of approximately 6,282 people. Over the years this number has fluctuated by only a few hundred people. The name Stainforth is derived from two Old English words “stanig” and “ford.” This roughly translates to “stony ford.” In 1428, the town was recorded under the name “Staneforde.”  It is not clear when the name actually changed to Stainforth but some historians believe it was around the 15th or 16th century. In 1856, Stainforth established its own railway station called the Stainforth Railway Station, but it closed down only 10 years later in 1866. The town now gets train access from the Hatfield and Stainforth Railway Station.  In the last 100 years, Stainforth developed into a mining location after the creation of the Hatfield Main Colliery. This colliery was even used in a few films and television shows including “Brassed Off,” “Faith,” and “Dalziel and Pascoe.”

The colliery had a long lifespan from 1921 all the way up until 2001, which is when it first closed its production. But it reopened again in 2006 and eventually got back into full production mode in 2008. This would last another 7 years until it closed again in 2015. Stainforth had just developed the Hatfield Power Park and a 900 MW coal power station, so the closing of the colliery was a big shock to everyone in the town. The power station was connected by a 40-mile pipeline to the coastal village of Barmston, which is just off the North Sea. If the power station were activated then it would have released its carbon emissions underneath the seabed in order to prevent the emissions from going into the atmosphere of the planet.
