Rutherglen is a town located in the South Lanarkshire area of Scotland. Over 25,000 residents call it home. Rutherglen received the status of Royal Burgh in 1126 by Royal Charter, as decreed by King David I of Scotland. In the 14th century the Farme Castle was given to Walter Stewart by King Robert II. Stewart was the 6th High Steward of Scotland. Farme Castle was located in Rutherglen, until the 1960s. No remains from the building are left today.

It’s easy to get to Rutherglen when visiting. The town is served by the Rutherglen Railway station, as well as several bus routes into town. The M74 highway extension gives access to the airport and England’s border.

The area has a rich history surrounding it. Rutherglen was a centre of great industry until the 1950s. It was popular for coal mining and chemical works until this time. J&J White’s Chemical Works was in business from 1820 to 1967. There is still a significant amount of chromium VI waste in the area.

Rutherglen is believed to have been named from the Scottish gaelic phrase “An Ruadh-Ghleann, meaning "the red valley". Some believe the name may be derived from Rydderch, who was a Welsh-speaking king who ruled the region at the time.

Rutherglen has been home to many football clubs. Their current one is Rutherglen Glencairn F.C., who plays in the Scottish Juniors. They play at a new stadium called the Clyde Gateway Stadium, in the Burnhill region. Previously the Southcroft Park used to be in this spot before it was torn down for the new stadium.

George Henry Paulin carved a war memorial for the town in the 20th century. He was a popular sculptor who produced many war memorial and royal commemorative statues. He died in 1962.

There are many parks located in the Royal Burgh of Rutherglen. The Overtoun park contains many older buildings. The fountain contained in this park was moved here from Main Street. The fountain was built in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Unfortunately it had to be moved to make way for a road.

Woodburn Park is located in the Stonelaw region of Rutherglen and it’s located within a valley.

The Mental Health Arts & Film Festival holds many events in the Rutherglen village. They present many theatrical productions and community art workshops, and local art exhibitions. The Blairside Burnbeth Church hosts many festivals including a once a year arts festival.  Residents can enjoy poetry readings, and viewing local artwork from artists, and exhibitions of religious paintings. Lentfest is a once a year religious festival celebrated by many of the local churches, and draws crowds from all faiths.
