Dunsyre is a small village in South Lanarkshire located near South Medwin. It sits in the east of Carnwath and southwest of Edinburgh. Its name, which is reported to be of Celtic origin, signifies “the hill of the seer”.

In the early periods of Scottish history, the land of Dunsyre simply formed part of the vast possessions of distinct families in Lanark. In the 17th century, however, the land garnered more attention as it became the seat of an ancient barony. It was during this period that Convenanters started frequenting the village for retreats.

From 1867 to 1945, a railway branch running from Carstairs to Dolphington served Dunsyre. This didn’t only prompt population growth but also contributed to the village’s economy. Sometime after, the railway was shut down and a disused embankment of this runs along south of the village today.

Dunsyre Hill

Overlooking the village is the Dunsyre hill. It forms the termination of Pentland Hills and has an elevation of 500 feet or 150 metres above land surface.

With its striking aftertaste, many people pair the cheese with either Rhone wine or Whisky.
