HISTORY

Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Dolphinton as a post-office hamlet and a parish located on the eastern border of the upper ward of Lanarkshire.

The village dates back centuries ago and the local manor once belonged to the elder brother of the first Earl of Dunbar, Dolfine, after which the village received its name. The estate was owned by the Brown family in various forms from the 16th to the 19th centuries. It then passed to the McKenzie family by marriage.

Dolphinton became a pertinent place of Bothwell and shared along in the fortunes of that barony.

GEOGRAPHY

Dolphinton is located 7 miles northeast of Biggar. It is also 11 miles northeast of Carstairs, 10 miles southwest of Leadburn and 27 miles southwest of Ediburgh. All of these distances apply when on the A702 road.

Biggar Glassworks Museum – the only preserved gasworks left in Scotland. The small town of Biggar had its own gasworks as early as 1839 and over the years it was modified and expanded in order to keep up with the increase in demand. When natural gas from the North Sea came to Biggar in 1973, the gasworks shut down. However, it wasn't demolished but was preserved by the Historic Buildings and Monuments and the National Museums of Scotland for future generations.
