HISTORY

In 1750, five roads served the village and it was also home to a number of inns and other services for travellers who arrived in town headed to a different place. By the 1800s, a metalled road was built in order to connect Abington with Douglas via Red Moss. As a result of this, the direct track located to the north from Crawfordjohn became limited in use and the one to Abington lessened in importance.

The village experienced wider developments of the road network which resulted in the decreased importance of the road south to Leadhills. This left Crawfordjohn sitting astride a minor B road that links Sanguhar with Clydesdale – something that remains true to this day.

Over time, the road from Abington via Red Moss became the main A74. This made Crawfordjohn just two miles off of one of the most important routes in Scotland. However, the new M74 motorway that was built during the 1990s turned the old A74 into a beautiful yet deserted B7078. This move cemented the removal of Crawfordjohn from mainstream transport links in Scotland.

Business owners in the village didn't welcome the idea, but somehow the arrival of the M74 has turned Crawfordjohn into a really attractive and peaceful place to visit.
