Biggar is a town located on the northern edge of the Southern Uplands. It has a rich historical background and has been a royal burgh since 1451. The town still retains its medieval layout with its street lined with houses that are centuries old.

History

Biggar is located close to two great rivers of Scotland: the Clyde which flows west and the Tweed which flows east. The earliest known occupation of the town was during the Stone and Bronze Ages due to the artefacts from those period found in the area.

The strongest evidence of occupation was during the Iron Age because of the proof of a settlement existing on the hills surrounding the town. Bizzyberry Hill contains remains from the Iron Age that date back to over 2000 years.

King David I promised the lands of Biggar to Baldwin, a Fleming leader, in the 12th century in return for his support. A motte and bailey castle was built and can still be seen from High Street.

Robert Bruce gave lands to the Fleming family in the 14th century because they supported his cause. The family then built the Boghall Castle, which only a few mounds remain today. However, the Fleming family had their lands taken away when they supported Mary, Queen of Scots.

PARKS & OPEN SPACES

Biggar and District Regional Park – is open from May to September and located 1 km north of Biggar on Highway No. 4. The park provides overnight camping facilities. So, if you want to spend a getaway with a loved one outdoors, this is the place for you. You can also make it extra special when you send flowers to Biggar first before heading to the park.

Biggar Public Park – a beautifully kept park. It has an 18-hole golf course and a 9-hole putting green. Other facilities include: two synthetic tennis courts, one lawn bowling rink, a boating pond with pedalos and rowing boats and a play area for children.

Biggar Park – is a ten acre garden that features a traditional walled garden with lots of herbaceous borders that stretch far and wide. It also has shrubberies, fruit, vegetables and a potager. ATTRACTIONS

Moat Park Heritage Centre – features geology displays that explain how the Clyde and Tweed valleys were formed. There are also models of early dwellings, mottes, castles and castle houses which are all accompanied by archaeological exhibits.

Gladstone Court Museum – is where you can stroll along real Victorian streets and visit small shops. It's a great place where you can learn and experience the Victorian times.

Greenhill Covenanters Museum – was a 17th century farmhouse that was rescued by the Biggar Museum Trust from its original site in Winston. This is where you can revisit the signing of the National Covenant and the “Killing Times” where people were hunted down for worshipping in open fields rather than in churches.

Biggar Gasworks Museum – is the only preserved gasworks left in Scotland.
