Charfield is both a village and a civil parish located in the English county of South Gloucestershire. This village is close to the Little Avon River — the river is actually in Damery and Huntingford — and situated southwest to Wotton-under-Edge. Other villages nearby include Cromhall and Falfield. Charfield village is located in the lower western portion of England, near Wales. There are about 2500 people living here.

This small village has several business, considering its size. There used to be a railway station to bring passengers into town, but it has been replaced by a vehicle dealership. In the past there was the Charfield Railway station, but it was closed in 1965. It still remains. In 1928 there was a fatal train derailment that killed fifteen people. There have been recent talks about reopening the Charfield Railway station. Today, the Bristol-Birmingham main railway line runs through the village. This is a portion of the Cross Country route. The railway line marks the division between two different telephone exchanges.

There are two churches located in Charfield, St. James’ Church, and St. John’s Church. St. James’ Church is no longer in use and is a listed building. It was an Anglican church and was built during the 13th century. the region experienced a boost from the wool trade in the 15th century, so it was extensively rebuilt, but fell out of repair in the 18th century when the wool trade moved away. The church was repaired in the 1970s.

St. John’s Church is still in use with services every Sunday, and meetings throughout the week. The church holds regular jumble sales and plant sales during the year. This church was founded in 1879 and most likely never had a graveyard, due to the Burial Act of 1853, prohibiting them in urban regions.

The village is broken into four different housing sections. These are called Farm Lees, Longs View, Manor Lane, and Woodlands. There is a play area for students at the local school. The Bennett’s Farm is also located here.

Charfield has the Memorial Hall and the Playing Field for popular recreational activities. Both have been upgraded recently with new sporting equipment and amenities.

In the past the village has hosted the Charfield Beer Festival. Many artists from Charfield have participated in the Thornbury Art Festival, and many will participate in the festival in April of this year. The festival has been one of the longest running in the country. It begins in February and ends in April. There are events for school, draws, and art exhibitions each year.
