Located near Maybole in South Ayshire, Scotland, Blairquhaun Castle is one of the more remarkable attractions in the southwest region of Scotland. The historic home of the Hunter-Blair Baronets for many years, it was recently sold to a company from China. The castle itself is protected under Category A and you can find the grounds in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland which demonstrates its historic significance.

History

The first tower house which eventually became the castle was believed to have been constructed in 1346 under the ownership of the McWhirters. By 1573, the castle had been passed to the Kennedys who completed its construction. By the early 17th century, the ownership had passed to the Whitefords who ran the castle until 1798 when a devastating bank crash bankrupted the family and forced them to sell the property to Sir David Hunter Blair, 3rd Baronet.

By 1820, the castle was essentially ruined due to neglect and a fire which had destroyed much of the property. Sir David had a new house constructed on the property and commissioned for the removal of the old ruins and the construction of a Tudor-style castle. In a nod to its past, the new construction included many of the old sculpted stones and mouldings from the previous castle. It was all completed four years later and over the years it became the centre of an important collection of paintings created by artists from across Scotland.

By 2012, Sir Patrick David Hunter-Blair, 9th Baronet, sold the property to Ganten Scotland, which is owned by a Chinese company and bottles mineral water.

Blairquhaun Castle Today

Visiting the castle grounds today, you will see a beautiful walled garden, many trees that have been around for a century or more, and well-maintained grounds which were the pride and joy of the Blair family. One tree in particular, an old sycamore which was planted early in the 16th century during the time of King James V of Scotland, is believed to be a Dule Tree or hanging tree used to execute criminals.

The grounds themselves combined with the attractions of nearby Maypole make visiting the castle an enjoyable experience if you are in this part of Scotland. It is well-maintained and even offers a large venue for private functions and many noted films and TV shows have used the grounds for production purposes.
