HISTORY

Orchard Portman was given to the minster church of Taunton in 854 by King Æthelwulf of Wessex. At that time, the estate was known as Orceard.

Before being part of the civil parish of Orchard Portman, Thurlbear was part of the North Curry Hundred, one of the 40 historical Hundreds in Somerset before the Norman Conquest. The village of Orchard Portman, on the other hand, was part of the Taunton Deane Hundred.

The manor passed to Elfric de Orchard in 1135. Christina de Orchard, one of his descendants, married Walter Portman. As such, the second part of the village's name is derived from the Portman family. The Portman family includes prominent member Sir William Portman, Chief Justice of the King's Bench and lord of the manor.

In 1944, the estate was sold to the Crown Commissioners.
