Galhamptom is a small village of 400 residents, located in the shire county of Somerset, in the southwest region of England. It’s part of the parish of North Cadbury and Yarlington. The name Galhamptom means “the settlement of the rent-paying peasants”. The closest road connections are the A359 and the A303 to get to and from town. Most of the homes of this village are located on the east side of A359. Its past history was based on agriculture.

The village is so small that it does not have any shops, though it does have a small inn with pub. It’s served by two railway stations; one to London, and one to the southwest.

In 1945 the village had about ten farms, but today only two remain. In 1885 more than half the town thrived with rows of apple cider tree orchards. Almost every cottage, farm, and dwelling had its own orchard, though the town manor had the largest. One of these orchards has become a refuge for wildlife. In the past these apples were supplied to larger farms that had big cider presses. Apples were meticulously hand picked. Workers were paid back in cider drinks, which they may have resold in town. After handpicking became uneconomic, most orchards were abandoned except for a few carefully maintained on private sites.

Many apples are made for annual wassails and apple pressing events, such as for the Galhampton Party in the Park Festival. People assemble to enjoy good brews, concerts, and children’s events.

Two chapels used to be located in the village but now only one remains. The other chapel was sold and renovated to a house. Villagers may attend Church of England services at the remaining chapel, the Parish Church of Galhampton.

The local village hall is a popular location for villagers to assemble. It’s been updated and restored over time. There is space for private bookings. The village hall committee hosts various activities over the course of the year to collect funds to maintain the building.

Galhampton has a charming mix of old homes, combined with buildings from the 60s and 70s. Some of the houses are several hundreds of years old. The Old Pub contains restaurant and Inn for visitors to enjoy. It’s located on the edge of the village and is a popular spot for both villagers and town folk.

There is a newer playing field where people can assemble and play sporting games. Modern equipment is enjoyed by players.

Conservative party politician and British army officer Lieutenant-Colonel Dennis Coleridge Boles lived a greater portion of his life at Barrow Court, Galhamptom. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1939 to 1951, and was a noted polo and cricket player.
