Cross Houses belongs to the parish of Berrington in the Shrewsbury and Atcham District of Shropshire. It is the largest village in Berrington and it lies on the A458 road which is four miles south-east of Shrewsbury.

HISTORY

In 1792, Atcham was incorporated under a local Act, and it was one of several incorporations which included Oswestry, Ellesmere, Whitchurch and Montgomery and Pool. The incorporation followed the example set by Shrewsbury in 1783. As a result of the Act, Incorporation powers were given which included being able to construct and operate a workhouse. Atcham did just that soon afterwards, and the site chosen was at Cross Houses.

The workhouse building at Cross Houses was designed by J.H. Haycock. It was three storeys high with red brick used in its construction. This Atcham Union Workhouse was constructed in 1793, and underwent several extensions throughout the years to increase capacity.

During the First World War, the workhouse became the Berrington War Hospital. After that, it was transformed into a general hospital, a maternity hospital and a geriatric hospital. Later on, it was used as offices and storage for the NHS Trust admin, however, those closed in 2000. Since then it has been redeveloped into modern housing.

The development commenced in 2001 and the aim during the entire process was to preserve the heritage of the original buildings within the workhouse complex. While other extensions were taken down, only the original workhouse building (now a residential accommodation called Haycock House after the original designer), the kitchen/laundry block and the chapel remain. The chapel now houses a community centre while the kitchen/laundry block contains offices.
