HISTORY

The name Clun is derived from the river which the town stands in. The town grew around the site of a Saxon church built towards the end of the 7th-century AD. In the area surrounding the town was a scattered population during the Neolithic period.

Clun was part of the historic drove road which was used to drive flocks and herds from Wales to the markets of Midlands and London. During the Norman Conquest, Clun was part of the lands of Eadric The Wild. When he revolted against King William I, his lands were confiscated and given to Roger de Montgomery, later Earl of Shrewsbury.

ATTRACTIONS

There are some really interesting attractions in Clun, and these include:

Clun Castle – a Norman castle that is now in ruins. It is a Grade I listed building owned by the Duke of Norfolk and managed by English Heritage.
