The Parish Church

The Parish Church of Tweedsmuir was built first in 1643 and then renovated in 1874 by John Lessels. But another restoration project for the church also took place in 2002. Red Sandstone had been used in its construction while its bell has been the property of the church since 1773. The oak that has been used for the window panels are from a tree planted by Sir Walter Scott in Abbotsford. The churchyard was both a first and a second war memorial site. The Parish Church also holds many stone tombs which date back to the eighteenth century.

Oliver Castle

Historically, The Oliver Castle stands tall. The Oliver Castle is a small country estate that comes within the borders of Tweedsmuir Village. Owned by the Tweedle Family, this was a small castle which is 300 m above sea level and holds a history of family rivalry and bitter conflicts over property and livestock that went on for generations.

The Crook Inn

One of oldest inns in Scotland, the Crook Inn is where the Poet Robert Burns wrote the poem Willie Wastle’s Wife. It was later redecorated in the modern Art Deco style that is still a part of the interior decor today. Presently, the Crook Inn has been updated to become the community centre for the village of Tweedsmuir in order to encourage community spirit among the locals and to improve tourism in the area.
