Hiking or cycling – the Southern Upland Way's western end starts on the shore at Portpatrick and ends at Cockburnspath. This setup might be confusing as the town is located more than a hundred yards inland.

Additionally, Cockburnspath is located close to John Muir Way, which is a 215-kilometre stretch across the heartland of Scotland. It runs from Helensburgh in the west to Dunbar – the birthplace of Muir – on the east.
