Carlops is a linear village with a distinct identity. To the front of Carlops Mains, the fields are very open. Compared to the height of the former quarry, this feature is quite in contrast with it. This distinct characteristic of the land is what gives Carlops a sense of enclosure about it.

History

Carlops was founded in 1784. This was when a cotton weaving industry was established by Robert Brown the Laird of Newhall. As a result, rows of weavers' cottages on either side of the main Edinburgh-Biggar Road were laid out.

Much of Carlops is part of a Conservation Area. The most important of which are the rows of original cottages, although they have been altered a bit in some ways. Their features are more or less the same: single storey with porches. However, there are properties like the Allan Ramsay otel and Carlops Mains which rise to two storeys. Majority of the properties have the same features: the use of beige, sandstone, slate and harling, as well as having some sort of garden out front.

The name Carlops derives from “Witches' Leap” which in Scottish is “Carlins Lowp.” Near the south of the village stands two exposed rock faces that measure about 20 metres in height. They stand facing each other with a similar distance between them. Folklore has it that witches would leap from one stone to the other for entertainment during the evening.

Abbotsford House – a Scots baronial house and garden that was built by novelist Sir Walter Scott. It features a series of garden enclosures behind the house based on Scots tradition.

Manderston Garden – an early 20th century house with a terraced garden and transition to a lake and a woodland garden which was planted in the 1950s. It's a great place to walk among Carlops flowers and other plants. The walled garden is something to look out for thanks to vigorous planting.

Monteviot House Garden – a 30-acre riverside garden that overlooks the River Teviot. It features a terrace, rose garden herbaceous garden, pinetum, Labernum tunnel and water garden that have islands linked by bridges.
