Empingham is located in the county of Rutland, in the mid-eastlands portion of England. It’s a small village of only 815 people, according to the 2011 census. It’s situated on over forty-one kilometres of land. It’s surrounded by farm land, with the Rutland Water Reservoir and Dam being artificially handmade to supply water to the region. The A606 brings travellers and and commuters to and from the village.

The town’s reservoir was originally called Empingham Reservoir, but was renamed to Rutland Water, the same name as the county.

The White Horse is an older building in the village. It’s a two storey building with red roof, and has a B&B and a restaurant located inside. It’s one of the few businesses located in the town.

The town has the Church of St. Peter. It’s considered a Royal Peculiar, which is exempt from the diocese it’s located in, and answers directly to the monarch. It has ties to the Lincoln Cathedral in Lincoln, England.

This village region has had some interesting past history. Near the Great North Road, which is to the north east region of the village, the Battle of Empingham was fought in 1470. This was one of the Wars of the Roses, between the Plantagenet, Lancaster and York royal houses of England, as each battled for the sole seat on the throne.

This battle  has also been called Losecoat Field and Losecote Field. As the Lancasters lost, they tossed off their coats so that no one would identify them as being from that royal house. Some people don’t believe that theory, and say that the term losecoat means pigsty field. The word losecoat is often used for field names throughout other Rutland parishes in England.

Modern historiographers call the battle field Hornfield, to add to the confusion. The woodland beside the battle field is unanimously called the Bloody Oaks.

Village folk can go for an outdoor stroll along the footpath to Fort Henry and Greetham. The footpath takes you through fields, and a bridleway junction. Walkers can go path Woodside Farm. Drivers can also enjoy a drive along the water circular route around Rutland Water. There are many scenic views along the Rutland Water Dam. Wind surfing on Rutland Water is a popular sport during summer weather. At Rutland water is a modern structure called the Great Tower.

There are many other farms in town including the Mill Farm and Cross Roads Farm when one can enjoy buying fresh produce and jams and pickles.
