HISTORY

Although a small village today, Barrowden was important enough back in 1349 to have its own market and fair. By 1489, the stalls in the market place were vacant and before 1526, these stalls were destroyed and no fairs were held.

The Wakerley and Barrowden railway station used to serve the village from 1873 to 1966.

The Manor

Barrowden belonged to the king, along with its members Seaton, Thorpe, Morcott, Bisbrooke, Glaston and Luffenham at the time of the Domesday Survey.

The Church

At the western extremity of the village stands the church of St Peter. It was restored in 1843-1844 and more extensively in 1875.

Its most interesting feature is located on the north wall of the aisle: a beautifully carved memorial made of freestone to Rowland Durant. One notable tradition is the annual Rush Bearing ceremony which takes place on the feast day of St Peter and St Paul on 28 June.

Apethorpe Hall – now called Apethorpe Palace. This is one of the greatest country houses in England and is particularly important because of its ownership, as well as its role in entertaining Tudor and Stuart monarchs. Once owned by Elizabeth I, having inherited it from Henry VIII, the castle was a royal palace which was lived in regularly by James I and Charles I.

Barnsdale Gardens – features 18 inspiring gardens and is the largest collection of individual gardens in Britain. Spread across an eight-acre site, visitors will enjoy the range of garden styles and planting schemes featured here. The place has been referred to as “a theme park for gardeners.”
