The Birks Cinemas was built in 1939. Located at the heart of town, the Art Deco style building was closed in the early 80s due to lack of business. It was then converted into an amusement hall. The said venue was closed in 2004.

Five years later, a group called Friends of the Birks bought the property. The intent was to create a new cinema with 92 seats, along with a cafe. The project was completed in the spring of 2013. Alan Cumming, an actor born in the town, is its patron.
