History

Fortified since Anglo-Saxon times, Wallingford still bears traces of these structures in the centre of town. Wallingford is set around an important crossing point of the River Thames and this is where the town grew up. It was formerly part of Berkshire but has since been moved to Oxfordshire.

Wallingford Castle used to be a key strategic centre and a regular royal residence but the civil war and Black Death changed all that, respectively. The castle declined rapidly and Oliver Cromwell ordered it destroyed. Today, only little remains of the historic fortress.

The market town of Wallingford prospered in the Middle Ages as a trading centre. But the town declined beginning in 1416 when Abingdon Bridge opened. However, it did experience a revival in the 18th century when two turnpike roads were established through town. The brewing industry also contributed to the town's growth.
