History

Axes dating back to the Paleolithic times were found west of the village and north-east of Brighthampton. Some Neolithic implements have been found to the north of Standlake while Bronze Age burials were found in ring ditches in Standlake Downs. An extensive Iron Age settlement with round huts and storage pits were also found near the Bronze Age site. Roman settlement sites have also been discovered in the north and north-eastern part of the village, as well as west of it.

The name Standlake comes from the Old English for “stone stream.” The village came to being in the middle of the 12th century.

Attractions

St Giles'  Church – a Church of England church that dates back to the 12th century and was restored by Gothic Revival architect C.C. Rolfe between 1880 and 1891.

Gaunt House – located about half a mile east of Standlake, this moated house was built in the latter part of the 15th century. It passed through many owners in its lifetime and as a result has gone through many replacements with only the timber frame remaining of the original structure.
 
Lincoln Cottage – a timber-framed cruck structure dating back to 1500.

Cheswell Cottage – formerly called Bodens, this timber-framed cottage was built around 1550 and was owned by Lincoln College, Oxford by the 17th and 18th centuries.
