History

The Assendons was first recorded in 800 AD, and at that time it was called Assundene. The name is said to be taken from the Saxon words denu (long, narrow winding valley) and assa (ass); when combined they meant Valley of the Wild Ass.

Soon after, Assundene became Afsington then Assendene. The last one was the name the village bore until the 20th century which was when the modern name of Assendon was used.

Henley Cemetery – there are two chapels here that are listed properties.

The Fox – a former public house located on the A4130. It's now a private building.

Henley Park – located east of the village. It used to be a medieval deer park, and eventually it became part of the manor of Henley.

Greys Court – a Tudor country house set in an idyllic estate with delightful gardens. The mansion was home to the Brunner family. Here you can explore the tranquil gardens, including a series of walled gardens that provide a burst of colour.

Stonor Park – a country house as well as a private deer park in the Chiltern Hills. Stonor Park is the ancestral home and seat of the Baron Camoys. The house is an Italianate structure and is open to the public, as is the garden.
