Chalgrove, a village in the county of Oxfordshire, is located in the southeast region of England. It is ten miles south of Oxford and includes the hamlets of Rofford and Warpsgrove.

Chalgrove’s village history dates back to the Roman era; a very rare silver Roman coin (believed to the first of its kind found in England) was found during an archaeological expedition in Chalgrove. Other findings included cropmarks of filled-in moats and earthen works, as well as the remains of a 13th century manor house. The village is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Celgrave” which derives from the Old English word for “at the chalk or limestone pit.”Chalgrove was also the site of small English Civil War Battle, the Battle of Chalgrove Field.

With a long history, there are many historic structures within Chalgrove, including Chalgrove Manor which dates to the late 14th- early 15th century. The house and extensive gardens are often open to the public. St. Mary the Virgin Church is the oldest building in the village, built in the 12th century. The church includes an impressive set of medieval wall paintings that tell the story of Christ from King David to the Day of Judgement.  St. Mary’s is an active Church of England parish.

Located on the outskirts of the village is Chalgrove Airfield, a Royal Air Force base that opened in 1943. It housed both RAF and United States Army Air Forces during World War II that were involved with reconnaissance missions in Europe. After the war, it served as a testing site for fighter plane ejection seats. It is now owned by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Chalgrove is located on the Chalgrove Brook with many open fields and housing surrounding the central stream. There are a number of walking and cycling paths throughout the village. While a small community, Chalgrove has many social activities and events to foster pride and celebrate the village. One of the pride and joys of Chalgrove is the Chalgrove Band, an amateur brass band that has existed since the end of the 19th century. The band performs in parades, special events, and hosts concerts at Chalgrove Village Hall including the annual Chalgrove Live Music Festival. The village also hosts a village festival, summer ball, art week, and annual horticulture show.
