Cassington: A Glance at the Past

Archaeological evidence suggests that Cassington had been inhabited during the Neolithic times and had a Saxon settlement with buildings and a field system. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 and recorded as a part of hundred of Wootton, though during at time it was called Cersetone. Its name is derived from the Old English word “Caersentun”, which can be translated into “tun where the cress grows”.  

In 1086, Cassington was divided into several manors, though they were all ruled by one feudal overlord, the Bishop of Bayeux. The bishop made Ilbert de Lacy the mesne lord of the largest manor and made Wadard (who was one of William the Conqueror's knights) the mesne lord of two smaller manors. Over the years, the manors were passed from one owner to another; many of the structures no longer exist, although there are markers where they once stood.

Cassington was enclosed in 1801, and several developments took place since then. The Cassington Cut, which was a canal that linked Cassington to the Thames, was built by the 4th Duke of Marlborough in the early 1800s, and the Witney Railway was built in the 1860s. The A40 road, which connects London to Wales and passes through Oxfordshire near Cassington, was built in 1935.
