In John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, Treswell is described as a parish in the East Retford district of Nottinghamshire. It is “1¾ mile S of Leverton r. station, and 6 ESE of East Retford.” The entry goes on to add: “The property is much subdivided. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln.”

Treswell is also mentioned in the Domesday Book as Tireswelle which most probably came from the Anglo-Saxon Tires wella which means “well of spring belonging to a man named Tir.”

Today, Treswell is under the administration of the Bassetlaw Council and Treswell parish council.

The church was restored in 1855 but the main structure is probably from the 13th to 15th centuries.
