Mattersey is a village located in the northern portion of Nottinghamshire county in the east midlands portion of England. Mattersey is just north of Retford, and sits on the border between Nottinghamshire, and South Yorkshire. It’s 22 kilometres from the city of Doncaster. During the last census, 770 residents were counted as living in this village.

The original part of Mattersey was called Mattersey Thorpe, which was originally a grouping of five farms. Bleak House Farm was one of the larger farms, built in 1797, which still exists today, but it hasn’t been run as a farm for the past twenty years. Another one was called The Gables, and it’s now been split into three homes, with one being vacant for the past 30 years. Besides the residential areas that have been converted, most of the actual farm buildings remain, including a large barn, and a dovecote. There also used to be the Poplars farm but it now has a house with three large grassy fields. Today there are still some sugar beet fields which are being grown near one of the schools.

In WWII many poorly built bungalows were built to house people. The streets surrounding these bungalows were named after prominent people in the war, such as Churchill, Bader, Bloomfield, Wavell, and Cunningham.

Mattersey contains the All Saints parish church. It was built during the 13th century. The church still has its original rectangular tower and underwent a restoration during 1866. There are some important relics that remain within this church. There are two untouched carved panels from the 14th century that reside in the Hawton Easter Sepulchre. These are believed to have been brought here from the Mattersey Priory. The tower clock in the church is from modern times and was made by G. & F. Cope from Nottingham, in 1921. There is also an organ that has been registered officially on the National Pipe Organ Registry.

Over a kilometre on the east side of the village is Mattersey Priory on a gravel island in the River Idle. This is in ruins. It used to be a monastery from the Gilbertine order. This site is currently managed by English Heritage. It’s believed the monastery was founded around 1185. The monastery has been dedicated to St. Helen. It’s believed that it was mostly marsh back in the past, and not water like it is now.

In the past, a weekly Monday market was held in Mattersey in 1403. King Henry IV also granted permission for several annual fairs to be held. There was St. John Beverley’s Day on May 7th, and St. Simon and St. Jude’s Day on October 28th.
