Keyworth is a large village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire.  It is located about six miles from the centre of Nottingham, and sits on a small but broad hilltop.  There are many ways to get to Keyworth, as it has access to a bus line connecting it to Nottingham, which includes late-night bus service on the weekends.  There is also a railroad station about eight miles away, and an airport about seventeen miles west.  Keyworth used to have its own railroad station, but it was unfortunately closed in the 1960’s.  

Keyworth’s history goes back quite far—the earliest known records date back to 1086, though contemporary archaeological work has discovered Roman artefacts.  This suggests that there were people occupying Keyworth as far back as 800 AD.  Keyworth was originally an agricultural community, though the rise of frame-knitting allowed for local employment and expansion in the 1880’s.  

There are many historical sites in Keyworth, including two barns that date back to the 17th century, and the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, which is dated at either the 14th or 15th century.  More recently, Keyworth is the home to the headquarters of the British Geological Survey and has been since 1976.  

Though its history is rich and very interesting, Keyworth also offers many things to do today.  For example, every summer on the second Saturday of July, visitors and residents can join together for The Keyworth Show, which includes a horticulture show, various displays, and a fairground.  If you live for competition, on the second Sunday in December, Keyworth sponsors a half-marathon road race called the Keyworth Turkey Trot.  It’s been held annually since 1983, and attracts hundreds of runners from all over.  On the same vein, the Keyworth Village Quiz, which began in 1976, is held for seven to eight weeks every year and allows local organisations to compete in University Challenge style head to head matches.
