Huthwaite is a small village of 7500 residents, located in Nottinghamshire, and in the eastern midlands portion of England. This village is west of the larger market town of Mansfield, and is near the Derbyshire border. The population count also includes the Ashfield ward of west Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Prior to 1907, the village was called Hucknall-under-Huthwaite and also as Dirty Hucknall. The word Huthwaite comes from an Old English word with Norse elements. Hoh or haugr is an Old Norse word meaning hill. Thwaite means a clearing or a clearing on a hill spur.

Hucknall meant Hucca’s heath, or a portion of land that is on an angle. Hucknall is still present today and is located near Nottingham. There is also Ault Hucknall village in Derbyshire.

In 1800, the town had a population of 500 people. Once the Hucknall Colliery was built the village started expanding. The colliery was a drift mine that was located at the bottom of Blackwell Road.

What is now the Miners’ Arms public house is believed to have originally been the colliery manager’s cottage. The colliery was worked for over fifty years before closing.

In 1877, a new mine was opened up called the New Hucknall Colliery. This mine employed over 500 people. By 1881, there were over 2000 residents living here.

In 1912, about 1300 of the village’s residents were employed by the hosiery manufacturer called the CWS Hosiery Factory, or Cooperative Wholesale Society. This business was eventually merged with Coats Viyella, who still is in operation today, though not in the village. There are several old buildings in the village that housed the hosiery business. It’s believed that over 400 people were employed by the business during its most successful times. Unfortunately, the village granted permission for the demolition of all the remaining factory buildings in 2015.

The village suffered when most of the mines closed, and the hosiery manufacturing was sent off shore. Most of the original shops have since become takeaway restaurants.

There is some dispute as to which hill is the highest in Nottinghamshire, and this honour is shared by four points.

Strawberry Bank has beautiful views in all directions of green grassy lands and blue skies. Its height is measured at 203 metres. Silverhill is a mine spoil-heap where the Silverhill colliery used to stand. It’s at 205 metres. Derby Road in Annesley, and Newtonwood Lane in Whiteborough have also been called “the highest point in Nottinshamshire”.

The village used to have a railway station to the west of the main road. The station was called Woodend for Hucknall Huthwaite, and first opened in 1886 to take passengers from here to Sutton-in-Ashfield. The station closed in 1926 and is currently a public footpath.
