History

A former coal mining community, Harworth used to product coal for power stations located on the River Trent. At its peak, a new pit tower was built in 1989 but production in the colliery stopped seven years later. It was announced in 2015 that the pit tower would be demolished and the site would be used for new housing.

In John Marius Wilson’s Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, Harworth was described as a parish in the Worksop district of Nottinghamshire. Today, Harworth belongs to the Bassetlaw district, which was formed through the combination of Worksop and the Retford district.

Attractions

Harworth is the home of Tom Simpson, one of the greatest cyclists in Britain who became World Champion in 1965. He collapsed and died during the thirteenth stage of the 1967 Tour de France. A small museum was put up in the Haworth and Bircotes sports and social club dedicated to his achievements.

An old church dating back to the Norman times called All Saints is also located in town. It’s a Grade II* listed building built on a mound.
